How can I get my church involved?
The best way for you to inspire your church is to get up and speak about the vision of Hope Rwanda, hand out brochures and show the Hope Rwanda DVD. If your church are interested in taking a team across, you will need to get permission from your senior pastor, then fill in the appropriate registration form. Your church can also support in other ways, like praying, fundraising and supporting any individuals who desire to go.

What about innoculations / vaccinations needed for Rwanda?

Please see your doctor for medical updates and recommended vaccinations

How can I prepare for my trip?

It is important that you do prepare for your trip in a number of ways.  Certainly flight, accommodation and vaccinations must be arranged.  You should also prepare for the cultural experience.  Do research on the internet.  Get travel books.  Watch documentaries.  Speak to people who are experienced in missions trips.  Recognise that it will be an experience where you will be confronted by customs, language, food, situations that you are not familiar with.  You should ensure that your health is strong too, so it is not a bad idea to get a little fitter and be well rested prior to departure!

As it gets closer to the date we plan to have much more detail on this as well as specific references to good sources of information.  If you come across a resource which you think is excellent then forward your recommendations to us.

  • Bradt Travel Guide "Rwanda"
  • ‘Hotel Rwanda’ is a movie that provides an account of the 1994 genocide through the eyes of a local at the time.
  • Lonely Planet East Africa is a travel guide with an entire chapter on Rwanda.
  • The book “Shake Hands with the Devil” is a biographical account of the 1994 genocide through the eyes of the author, the UN Commander on the ground at the time, Romeo Dallaire.
  • “A time to remember.  Rwanda: ten years after genocide” is a beautiful book published in Great Britain by The Aegis Institute (ISBN number 0-9543001-3-0)

What is the process for volunteering in Rwanda?
Please consider that the $ cost associated with travelling to Rwanda, is the same as the amount required to build a third of a home for widows and orphans. Please prayerfully consider your desire to help and how you will be most impactful. The cost of a 2 week trip, could be the difference between a child having a home or not.

For those that are still interested in volunteering, you need to register your interest with the Hope Rwanda office. Your application will then be assessed and you will be contacted for an interview.

You will be required to submit a number of documents including your resume, pastoral references and professional references.

Should I go to Rwanda?

The decision to travel to Rwanda is a very personal one.  We would ask you to consider it carefully and prayerfully.  There are a number of factors to take into consideration including cost, time, health, skills and capability.  It is important to realise that we are not a travel group, rather we are trying to make a long term difference!

The most sustainable way to make a difference is to contribute financially to the work of Hope Rwanda. If you believe you can be a contributor to assisting Rwanda and her people then please join Hope Partners.

Once I’ve been accepted as a volunteer, what happens next?
Once you have been informed by a team leader that you've been selected to join a team, you will then be required to do a number of things including:
  • Book your flights according to the schedule given by the team leader
  • Sign a Media Realease form
  • Sign a Disclaimer
  • Get your vaccinations
  • Arrange your Travel Insurance and Accommodation
  • Provide two Reference letters
  • Provide Qualification Papers
  • Provide Medical Certificate
  • Provide Valid Passport details

Hope Rwanda attempts to touch every segment of society as well as address poverty and social injustice in an impacting way. We will feed the poor, visit every prisoner, provide refuge for orphans, teach, distribute large amounts of literature and education material, train teachers & children’s workers and much more.

This initiative was launched in 2006 with a global event, the 100 Days of Hope. This event occurred between the 7th of April to the 15th of July to coincide with the anniversary of the 1994 genocide. International development organisation, key leaders, churches businesses and hundreds of volunteers will work side by side, combining their strengths and resources in projects that will make a significant and sustainable difference – changing and shaping Rwanda’s future.

In 2007, the need continues and so does Hope Rwanda... Many of the initiatives launched during the 100 Days of Hope continue today, as well as a number of exciting programs currently in development.

What does Hope Rwanda aim to achieve?
Hope Rwanda aims to restore Hope to a nation that has experienced atrocities and hardship that most people could not even imagine.  Hope Rwanda asks Rwanda “what do you need”.  We are working with Rwanda to find sustainable solutions to the local Rwandan people by empowering them with knowledge, skills and resource that allows them to bring solutions to their own lives and the lives of their families, communities and nation.

2007 Focus Areas Include:

Education

Hope Rwanda believes education provides the foundation for economic growth and self-reliance. It has additional benefits in health, governance, gender equality, stability and security, and in fostering effective states. Hope Rwanda will partner with the Rwandan Education System and Ministry of Education to improve their education systems and provide ongoing teacher training and mentoring. All programs are closely aligned with the Rwandan governments' education plans, systems and processes.

Hope Rwanda is supporting the upskilling of hundreds of primary and secondary school teachers in the city and regional areas of the country. A number of teachers will be identified for ongoing individual mentoring from skilled professionals in the Australian education system.

Healthcare

Hope Rwanda believes investment in healthcare is essential to ensure that the poor can expand their range of choices, improve their productivity and participate more fully in society.

There are many areas of need in Rwanda, including women's and children's health, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, malaria and the quality of health education. Initially Hope Rwanda will focus on

  • Transfer of Specialists skills to local medical practitioners through “Operation Open Heart”
  • The Provision of specialist cardiac surgical services

Hope Rwanda’s medical program focuses on helping those people most in need, particularly women and children.

Hope Rwanda partners with Operation Open Heart, an Australian-based nonprofit that sends volunteer teams of doctors and nurses to developing countries to diagnose and treat medical problems.

Infrastructure

Hope Rwanda believes that the development and maintenance of public infrastructure is an important ingredient for sustained economic growth and poverty reduction. Where appropriate, Hope Rwanda provides targeted funding, training and upskilling of local Rwandans, to build or upgrade homes, building, grounds or utilities.

Progress to date has included the following projects:

·         The Villageof Hope is a self-sustaining, holistic model providing for the complete needs of the child, widow and the community. In addition to the homes, the village is constructing a community centre, which includes facilities for a medical clinic, a counselling, skills training, as well as work opportunities within an agricultural project, a clean water source and electrical power. The homes themselves accommodate eight children and a house mother. They consist of three bedrooms, a kitchen, living area and bathroom. Each house also has running water and electricity - an uncommon amenity in Rwanda. They are constructed of brick and steel on a concrete slab, have windows with shutters, porches, flower beds and clothes lines. Each house is furnished with bunk beds for the children, living and dining room furniture.

·         Hope Rwanda is currently working with one of it’s partners build a community centre in Gasabo, Rwanda. This facility would support the Village of Hope as well as provide much need healthcare, skills training and counselling facilities to the entire Gasabo community. Gasabo is part of the Kigali province. It was created in early January 2006 as part of a government decentralization program that re-organized the country's local government structures.

·         Hope Rwanda is  currently putting together a project plan for a hospital rennovation and fit out in Gisenyi. Gisenyi’s current hospital is very under-resourced and in the community is in need of improved medical facilities.

Capacity Building
  • Hope Rwanda believes believes in capacity building as an approach to nations achieveing independence. Hope Rwanda aims to provide projects that increase the range of people, organisations and communities who are able to address problems, and in particular, problems that arise out of social inequity and social exclusion.
  • This project focuses on capacity building in communities with large orphan/widow populations as well as promoting and resourcing local Rwandan enterprise.
  • Wherever possible programs are  based on co-learning - where knowledge and skills relevant to the project, are shared with those willing to learn.

Who Supports Hope Rwanda?
