Fundraising for Hope
Hope Rwanda is not coordinating any fundraising projects. Hope Rwanda is simply a catalyst for organisations and individuals to focus their attention and resources on the immense needs in Rwanda. Those organisations and individuals who are partnering with Hope Rwanda will engage in their own fundraising initiatives to allow them to fund their own involvement in Hope Rwanda.
"Put simply, it’s a sense of co-ordination but not of control," says Mark Zschech. "We are asking partnering organisations to take ownership of events. They will then fund it, and run it, and we will assist them by putting them in touch with organisations and individuals in Rwanda to help them carry out their project aims."
Sharing with friends and family
Host a coffee night, dinner party, and progressive dinner. Show the Hope Rwanda DVD and share with them why your heart is moved.
Initiate a walk-a-thon, bike-a-thon or similar. Ask people in your world to sponsor you.
Fundraising in your neighbourhood
Host a neighbourhood morning tea or sausage sizzle. Formally invite your street, and then rally them to the cause
Invite a combined effort garage sale – have a spring clean. Get rid of all those unwanted items. Remember, one mans trash is another ones treasure. Be sure to let people know that the money is going to a good cause.
Organise a house spring clean team – gather a group of friends, then promote your services to the neighbourhood.
Organise a garden spring clean team.
Offer to be super nanny for an afternoon. Take the neighbourhood kids on an outing.
Organise a car wash. Get all the teenagers in your street to volunteer their time.
Have a movie night. Hire a projector and screen, organise some nibbles, then charge an entry fee. Idea! Why not show the movie “Hotel Rwanda”
Fundraising in the community
Organise a doughnut day - Krispy Kreme have a charity arm which allows you to purchase doughnuts for half the price and use the proceeds for charity. You could sell these at local community events, shopping centres, at the office (permission needed, of course)
Organise a movie fundraiser – hook up wit the local cinema and organise a screening of a great movie (like Hotel Rwanda) The ticket may cost you $8 and you could charge $15 – donating the balance to Hope Rwanda.
Use your skill – use the skills you have already eg. Piano teaching, tutoring, cake making, cooking – donate the proceeds.
Organise a gigantic morning tea – This could be held for mums picking up their kids from school. Ask the school if you can use the hall, or put mats, umbrella’s on the lawn. Charge $5 for a Devonshire tea (ask the local baker to donate scones)
Organise a big brekkie – work with local sports fields/organisations for a Saturday morning. Why not put on a big brekkie where you watch your kids play sport.
Organise a charity function – This one involves a bit more work, but can be done. Contact a local restaurant, ask local shops/companies to donate, get a local celebrity on-board, advertise in the local paper an in shop windows.
Fundraising at your workplace
Ask your company to donate finance – many companies/businesses have a charity budget and might be willing to help
Ask your company to donate gifts in kind. Good such as medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, clothing, computers, bikes can all be sent to Rwanda. Or, perhaps your company could offer pro-bono support (call us for ideas)
Organise an after work happy hour – promote it with an inexpensive invitation, so they know what it’s about, then pass around the hat for donations.
Run a fundraising event at lunchtime in your workplace. Choose something that you know your work colleagues will be interested in (debate/musical/cooking)
Organise a sporting tournament – golf, tennis, softball, walk-a-thon. Your company may be interested in sponsoring this, as it’s good for staff morale.
Organise a charity ball/auction/trivia night – present this as an idea to your social committee (this will all involve ticketing, venue hire, meals, entertainment, donated goods etc).
